Three Mile Island was a civilian nuclear plant, but the accident sent shockwaves through the U.S. Navy's nuclear submarine and carrier fleet. Admiral Hyman Rickover, the father of the nuclear navy, used the incident to tighten already strict safety protocols for naval reactors. Navy nuclear vessels have never had a reactor accident, partly because Rickover's standards were already far beyond civilian requirements -- and Three Mile Island proved him right.
